Glossary of Terms

Bandwidth
This term is typically misused to mean data transfer (see transfer). Bandwidth is the rate of data flowing in and out of a server. Rated in data per time. e.g. 100Mbit/s or 100Mb/s or 100Mbps.

Bit
(b) - A single binary digit. Can store the values 0 or 1. When used as a unit it is written as a lower case ‘b’. e.g. 100 b/s

Byte
(B) - 8 bits. When used as a unit it is written as an upper case ‘B’. e.g. 500 MB

Shared Hosting
A form of web hosting where many individual hosting accounts are maintained on a single machine. Each account’s website(s) competes for resources. Excessive resource usage of one website may significantly effect other sites hosted on the same machine even if they are from different hosting accounts.

Transfer
(Data Transfer) - A measure of data transferred to and from a server. Data transfer is measured in a variety of ways and may refer to web serving only or all services including email, FTP, cPanel updates, SQL database communication etc. Measured in bytes. e.g. 100 GB

VDS
Virtual Domain Server. see Virtual Private Server.

Virtual Hosting
see shared hosting.

Virtual Domain Server

Virtual Private Server
Web hosting based on virtualization technology. Similar to shared hosting, where more than one hosting account is hosted on a machine, except the virtualization of each server within a machine prevents one sites resource usage from effect another.
